The Buddy Band
The story, ‘Umngani’s Beads’ is about a boy from rural Natal who moves
with his family to an informal settlement outside of Durban.
As a new boy at school he falls victim to bullying and rejection,
a situation that so often exists in the classroom.
Umngani’s story should encourage children to be more accepting
of others who may be different to themselves.
The individually packed beading kits that make up the Buddy Bracelet,
relate to the story. A very simple ethnic bracelet is made using glass beads
and a large plastic bead, all of which are easy to thread onto the elastic.
Elementary counting skills and eye-hand co-ordination can be observed.
A fundamental understanding of symmetry is achieved.
The Zulu meanings of the colours of the beads are explained.
Normal teacher involvement for this age group is required
